Operational Excellence: A Pillar of the Well-Architectured Azure Framework

Operational Excellence e-book

As organizations increasingly move business critical systems to the cloud in order to realize efficiency and performance gains, those same business systems are becoming increasingly complex. In order to help manage this complexity and help organizations ensure their systems successfully meet business and user requirements, Microsoft introduced the Well-Architected Azure Framework, a set of principles and best-in-class guidance that improves workflows, reduces costs, and drives quality.

Without the Well-Architectured Azure Framework, businesses’ day-to-day operations can become disorganized, inefficient, and costly.

This framework is based on five core pillars of excellence:

  • Operational excellence
  • Cost optimization
  • Security
  • Performance
  • Efficiency
  • Reliability

What is Operational Excellence?

By Microsoft’s definition: Operational excellence ensures an application is running as expected. But while Operational Excellence may sound self-explanatory, there is so much more to simply operating well, as the name suggests.

Operational Excellence says that if a new update or iteration causes errors, the update must be automatically rolled back to its previous state to ensure operations continue to perform. Deployments, bug fixes, updates and more should all happen quickly and routinely, without interruption.

These are keys to the success of any organization’s cloud-based technology platforms.

Operational Excellence in Practice

Operational Excellence is based on the concept of considering and improving how software is developed, operated, and maintained, in order to ultimately achieve a higher competency in operations.

Operational Excellence depends on a series of considerations that can help achieve excellent operational principles.

The key principles for operational excellence include:

– Code deployments using Azure DevOps

– Infrastructure provisioning using ARM templates and PowerShell

– Infrastructure and application monitoring

– SRE (Service Reliability Engineering) process integration
